Religion and Metaphysics of Igbo Nsukka

Every tribe has a foundation, every race, an essence. This foundation cum essence are what serve as pillars to the people springing from such a tribe or race. From the primitive time, ancient men stood and went into spiritual covenant with unseen forces which informs the spiritual foundation of such a land. This foundation goes a long way in serving as the cornerstone where their offsprings rise or fall. The people of Nsukka cultural zone is a people whose level of spirituality is quite sophisticated. Their forebears were men and women rooted in spirituality and mysticism giving rise to the high level of esotericism of the cultural zone located in Enugu North Senatorial Zone. This book digs deeper into the earliest spiritual foundation of the Nsukka people which informs their traditional religion. While the influence of Christianity can be said to have been strongly felt here, the obvious is that many are still tied by the spiritual foundation already laid by the founding patriarchs of Igbo Nsukka. Such issues as their understanding of spiritual essence are addressed including such crucial aspects of their spiritual life like one’s “chi” (guardian angel), olua’r (reincarnate), Maa Olua Uwa, Ichekwu, Oyime, Ikpakachi, Ubu, the operations of witchcraft (mgbashi) and their exorcism etc. The book takes a deeper study into the creation of numerous deities in Igbo Nsukka and their contexts of creation and operations; the operations of these gods and goddesses can in no way be underestimated in Igbo Nsukka.
